What is Voice over IP and how does it work?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) turns analog audio signals (like that on a traditional phone call) into data packets that are transmitted over a private network or the Internet, like email. The voice signal is converted by using either adapters on your regular telephones, or with VoIP phones that perform this task internally.

Once digitized, the voice signal packets are sent out from your T-1 or DSL connection to a network (like the Internet) via a router or modem. After traveling through our network, the packets are reassembled at the receiving end of the call as sound.
